preble welcome center

Preble, ny

Dembling + Dembling Architects, P.C. (DDA) was the prime consultant on this project which included the demolition of an existing rest area facility and the design of a replacement facility.  Dufresne-Henry and three other sub-consultants worked on this project under the direction of DDA.

DDA was responsible for the architectural design of the replacement facility and overall coordination of the projects highway, site and landscaping development.

The Preble rest area is located on I-81, which extends from Pennsylvania to the Canadian border.  The rest area, which was constructed approximately 20 years ago, was undersized and is inadequate to accommodate the traffic, which passes through.  In addition the facility did not meet the guidelines for handicapped accessibility.  The former rest area also lacked an indoor lobby, indoor vending and indoor telephones.

The new facility provides an appealing comfort station that is adequately sized for future growth containing multiple public restrooms, NYS Police interstate highway patrol and commercial vehicle inspection office, a New York State truck inspection office, tourist information interpretive center display, vending and DOT maintenance areas.

The building is approximately 8,000 square feet.  Construction was completed October 2004.
